How To Remove Stuck Tie Rod End

  • #1

Edit: got it. Meet Mail service #five. Appreciate the groovy info on this forum, but man, no 1 reads the whole thread before replying :p

Any advice? Outer necktie rod end is stuck to the knuckle. Bankrupt it loose from the inner tie rod easily.

So far I have:

-applied plenty of PB Blaster.

-loosened castle nut, left a few threads on, hammered with a 4lb sledge for a while. No luck.

-bent a pickle fork/ball joint separator.

-hammered some more than.

-really bent the pickle fork.

-jacked up the forepart end of the machine past the castle nut.

-hammered more than

-tore the threads out of (not cantankerous-threaded. sheared! smashing!) a brawl joint removal tool (it took a breaker bar with a 4 foot extension on it to exercise this. I'm actually pretty impressed...but it doesn't help me)

Is it time to buy a good source of heat? Cutting the inner tie rod and then go knuckle hunting at the junkyard hoping that that ball joint comes out easier?

In the past calendar week I've done 3 bicycle bearings & hubs, ii cv axles, lower ball joints and sway bar endlinks, and I can't go the tie rod terminate off a @#$%^& taurus!?

Edit: got it. See Post #5.

Got information technology. Thank you for the suggestions - that'south what I ended up doing afterwards remembering that my Integra actually had nubs cast into the knuckle to concentrate the strength of sideways blows. Hammered it sideways for a while and then it popped out the next time I hit information technology vertically. Thanks again!

Tie rod ends are best removed by hammering on the side of the knuckle. Beating the threaded end is counterproductive. For tough ones, apply an air chiesel with a blunt bit in information technology. Put a few wraps of tape effectually the end of information technology. Spiral a nut partially onto the threaded end so the fleck cannot wander off. The tape will go on it centered; if non employ more than tape. A few blasts with the air chiesel is usually all it takes.
